In Queensland you must have a recreational marine drivers licence to drive a recreational boat with a motor greater than 6HP. Licence to Boat has developed a simply two step system to gain this.
Step 1: Consists of our online theory training package, Queensland’s first and best Boatsafe approved online training package. This is a fantastic course, and whether you are a beginner or a seasoned boatie there is something in it for you. You can do the course at home in one session and complete it in an evening, or break it up into smaller sessions over a few days. The training package automatically logs you back in to where you left off in your previous session.
Step 2: The second step is the practical part of your RMDL (recreational marine drivers licence). The practical course can be completed in 2-3 hours. So instead of spending your whole day sitting in a stuffy classroom, our online theory course allows more time for the practical on water experience. Practical courses are conducted on the beautiful Maroochy River, Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast.
Once you have completed your online theory course, it’s time to book your practical assessment. There are a Maximum of 5 people on any course (larger group bookings are available) offering you a more personal and friendly experience. We are here to help and guide you to become a safe boatie.
Licence to Boat uses a 5.8m Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB). “LTB One” provides a safe, comfortable and quiet boat on which to learn, its also fun to drive. Its no wonder that Police, Lifesavers and Navy all use Ribs, they are safe and practical vessels.
The Practical training goes like this:
We will give you a briefing of the vessel, safety, launch/retrieval tips and voyage planning.
Then you take the wheel under the guidance of our instructor and learn how to handle it like a pro! You will learn how to bring the vessel alongside a jetty, pick up a mooring, anchoring, conduct a “person over board” scenario and learn to manoeuvre the boat competently and confidently.
It’s as easy as that!
Once competent we will issue you with a statement of competency. This must be presented to Transport and Main Roads Queensland (TMR) within 6 months, you then pay their fee to receive your licence.
Please note: The statement of competency is not a licence, it must be taken to TMR within 6 months to gain your licence.
